Dexter – She Tried To Make Him Go To Rehab…

As discussed last week, I don’t think I’m alone in feeling rather skeptical about this season of Dexter after the disastrous last season. (And a lackluster couple of seasons before that.) So far the episodes have been strong, but I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Right now, I find myself completely invested in one storyline and relatively bored by the other. I keep waiting to care about the strippers and the murder of that cop, but I don’t. The cop who was killed wasn’t a character we’d been given an opportunity to get to know, and watching Joey Quinn drool over fake boobs isn’t grabbing me. Right now it just feels like filler.

I’m still loving the Dexter and Deb stuff though, as well as LaGuerta’s personal investigation into the blood slide she found at the crime scene. It’s a great use of her character, because it poses a threat not only to Dexter, but to Deb as well.

Deb, after realizing that her brother is actually a serial killer, couldn’t arrest him and had to come up with another option. She’s trying to rehabilitate him by making him move into her murder beach house so she can watch him 24/7. The Miami Metro case this week played perfectly into this. An incarcerated serial killer was revealing where his victims were buried, suggesting that he’d developed a conscience while in prison. He hadn’t. After a couple of days out in the sub enjoying his favorite ice cream, he ran in front of a truck on the highway. He hadn’t been cured and he’d rather die than be in jail.

I love how the Dexter/Louis stuff is really ramping up, culminating in Dexter all but doing the video game geek in. He called Deb instead of killing Louis, but I don’t think his promise to Deb was the only reason he didn’t follow through. Murdering Louis wouldn’t have kept in line with Harry’s Code, and that’s still even more important to Dexter. Since Louis has shown that he isn’t afraid of Dexter, it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

With LaGuerta, Louis, Deb and the strippers, Dexter has several balls in the air right now. So far it’s working for the show. What did you guys think of last night’s episode?

So far, so good. I think LaGuerta will put it all together. She will recall the issues that her old flame, Doakes, had with Dexter. But intern Louis will figure it out first and do a copycat killer thing. In a twist, he will have Dexter wrapped in plastic and just about ready to stab him when Deb shows up to save the day. They will then rig something up together to frame Louis for every killing, even though he’s too young. And at the end of the last episode, Dex will look into the camera with his best “see you next season” glare. Please, Showtime writers, do better than this!

I thought the Dex/Video game guy whose name I keep forgetting was great. I am just not sure I am buying Deb in this accomplice/savior role. Also, they just leave Harrison with a nanny indefinitely all night every night? OK, maybe they can do this for a few days but does Deb really think Dex can be rehabbed? And look how easily she let him go off on his own. ‘I nearly killed a guy and I’m a serial killer, please let me have a moment alone, “uh, ok”. This just doesn’t feel well thought out.

The LaGuerta stuff is good, really good because Deb is in hot water.

Also not bought into the Chicago cop death/stripper thing.

I’m watching but I am ‘meh”

Really? So far I totally buy Deb not turning Dexter in, though I think she regrets not doing it right away. Now she’s too involved, so if she turns him in she’s ruining her own life as well.

I’m bugged by how they didn’t mention Harrison as well. It was only one night so hopefully they rectify that this week.

Everyone seems to forget that we’ve got a villain in the works that makes Lewis kind of small potatoes. This Isaac guy is being slowly built up and has a direct link to Dexter in regards to the boat, as least according to the previews. Now if the stripper thing can lead the department to this guy, and they find out he’s after Dex, there will questions into this. This could lead someone like LaGuerta to Dexter perhaps, or at least tie the stories together.

The thing that bothers me though, is what they’re doing with Harrison. How are they explaining to Jamie why Dexter is never home at night, and why didn’t we see a conversation with Deb and Dex where she debated over the morality of leaving a baby in the hands of a prolific serial killer.

I’m also kind of shocked she hasn’t asked him if I killed Doakes. I know she’s got a lot on her plate, but you’d think that would occur to her at some point.

    • Jill says:

That could make it more interesting, for sure. The Harrison thing also bothered me – they need to address it ASAP. Dexter can’t just stay with Deb and have Harrison be with Jamie in the apartment. But I don’t think Deb would feel that Harrison isn’t safe, even though Dexter is a killer. I think she knows he’d never hurt Harrison.

I wonder when she’ll make the Doakes connection? I agree, you’d think she’d ask right away if he had anything to do with that.

Too much going on in just the 2nd episode. Give me some time to take some of this in! I’m having a hard time jumping from story to story when I’ve got questions not being answered. The whole time I’m watching, I’m like “umm, hey, youve got a kid” and then “uhh, deb, dont you want to acknowledge that he’s got that kid”. I hope this will all come into play and theyre just trying to squeeze everything in quickly to lead into a bigger better story. Id much rather have 2 really solid plot lines than 10 mediocre ones just being used to hurry the story along.
