Dexter – Cat and Mouse

I had mixed feelings at the beginning of this episode of Dexter. When Deb had her dream, I was worried we’d return to the I’m-in-love-with-my-brother train wreck of a storyline. But I still love what’s happening with Deb and Dexter. Now that she knows and has somewhat come to accept him, she has questions. Like questions about Rita, and Trinity. And one would think, eventually Doakes.

If Dexter hadn’t wanted Trinity for himself, the mother of his son would still be alive. It’s pretty simple, and it’s an idea that’s haunting Deb. And thus Harrison was sent off to visit his grandparents, so we can finally all stop being annoyed at all that.

It was interesting to see the murder from last week play out. At first Deb succeeded, and got the bad guy her way. But a police error complicated things, and the guy walked. Nothing else could be done, legally. Only Dexter could get the murderer off the street – a murderer that had it out for Deb. The cat and mouse thing Dexter had going on with that sick thug was thrilling.

I know, I know, I am supposed to be more intrigued by the Russian mobsters. You guys have given me great reasons why I should in the comments. And the fact that they got a man to shoot himself while looking at a picture of his family was intense. (Though, wouldn’t you have at least tried to take out the three guys instead of yourself? Maybe there was only one bullet.) But I’m not fully committed to this storyline yet.

I am really into the Yvonne Strahovski character though, even though she was barely in this episode. I’m such a fan of the actress, I think she steals even the briefest scenes. I really want to know where that relationship is going to go.

What did you guys think? Which thread in this season has been strongest so far?

Looks like Iaasic is going to have a much more prominent role soon, and the fact that he has a vendetta against the whole department could lead to some interesting things. A bold prediction is that LaGuerta ends up getting killed, thus saving Dexter from her investigations about the bay harbor butcher, and creating an event that perhaps Deb can’t forgive Dex for. After all, he’s the one who killed Victor. This is only partly based on the fact that I’ve been tired of LaGuerta as a character for a long time. Only partly.

But this was an interesting episode. One has to feel all kinds of bad for Deb. Years of therapy couldn’t undo this type of damage. I like the references to Rita, especially her suspicion about how she died. I had been wondering in the back of my head why she hadn’t asked about it before. It might be taking longer than expected, but at least the show seems to be addressing most of the concerns one would expect Deb to have.

Come to think of it, where was Harry this episode?

I also thought in the beginning they were going to pick up on Deb’s feelings for Dexter again and let me tell you, that, more than anything else scared the crap out of me this episode. Normally I would get irritated at a show for starting a story and leaving it dead, but this one needed to be burned along with those blood slides.

I thought it was a good episode although I am still not really caring about this Russian storyline but I wonder two things. Did anyone else sense that something is shifty with Quinn, like maybe he is more involved with this Russians than banging a stripper? Something seemed off to me with him, it may just be Quinn being Quinn but he just wanted to seem to accept that the murder scene was how it looked, the guy killing himself?

Umm, maybe a crazy question, but do we know if Dexter’s boat has been cleaned up since last week’s body? I assume so otherwise wouldn’t Miami Metro at least have gotten a call, considering how quickly they ended up at the bartender’s house after he was killed considering that this guy had no family and presumably no one to find the body quickly.

I think we are all back on board with this. What I am really enjoying is that I’m not caring anymore about the hokey things that the writers let slip through their script-writing fingers. That’s because the acting is so good and the intensity level is back to what it was in earlier seasons. And I have a feeling that Jill will be reviewing every episode after all!

I’m also thinking that maybe Quinn will be the expendable one instead of LaGuerta. Yes, he’s a dirty cop and it will get him in the end. Hats off to Batista for “smelling a rat”. (Or he will, very soon.)

As far as the Russians go, It almost seems like they get away with too much to be totally believable, but the boss is intense enough to keep that thread interesting. I was thinking the same thing about the faked suicide. Maybe there was only one bullet in the gun, but knowing he’s gonna die anyway, hey, take the boss out with you.

The biggest development in the whole episode I think, is Dexter letting go of his slide collection. That was his “tragic flaw”.
