The Amazing Race – To Catch A Thief

The rockers dropped their money in the travel agency. Twinny found it, alongside Trey and Lexie, and took off with it. Real nice, guys. So the rockers had to beg for money in one of the poorest countries on Earth. I didn’t need another reason to dislike the twins, but now I have one.

Once in Istanbul, the rockers had a slight lead with most of the teams behind them. The Monster Truckers and the Chippendales decided to take a train instead of a taxi, but with no traffic and a train that makes lots of stops it was a bad decision. The Chippendales jumped off and grabbed a cab, but for some reason Mr. Monster Truck thought being completed isolated from the rest of the group would be an advantage. What a moron. You can’t put a positive spin on ‘dead last’.

Speed Bump – I scream, you scream, we all scream for Turkish ice cream…

Speed Bumps on this show are too inconsistent. Sometimes they’re hard, other times insanely easy. All Josh and Brent had to do was eat delicious ice cream. Not a bad task, and it could be followed up with a luxurious bath? This show is getting too cushy.

Unfortunately for Josh and Brent, they found a way to screw up a simple challenge. They sampled ice cream at the wrong stand, so they had to backtrack and do it all over again. Time was lost, but on the bright side they got to eat more ice cream and probably made a random vendor owner’s day.

Detour – Simit or Scrub It

The Terrible Twins

In Simit, teams had to transport Turkish bagels through the streets of Istanbul to three different locations. In Scrub It, teams had to take some bathing items to a Turkish bath to be cleansed. Um, really? This felt like an obvious choice. With more locations and a busy area, Simit could go wrong in a lot of ways – but that indicated that Scrub It would probably take longer, if you did Simit correctly. I might have taken a risk and gone for Simit.

Most of the teams went for Scrub It because, well, obviously. It was funny to listen to them joke about it – the luxury was so out of place for the grimy race.

Josh and Brent went for Simit, so at least the band playing there got to be on TV. These guys just warm the hearts of all the locals as they travel the globe. Luckily for them, the Monster Truckers were pretty far behind thanks to their choice of transportation. They also went for Simit, and the editing made it look like they made up some ground but the Beekman Boys still finished first.

Roadblock – Who’s ready to pour their heart out?

More sweets! In this Roadblock, one teammate had to sell Turkish sherbet to passersby. It didn’t look like what we call sherbet though, it was liquid. Was it like Italian soda? It was funniest to watch the rocker try and do it, because he had both terrible sales and pouring skills.

Lexi channeled her cheerleading skills and finished first, and she and Trey arrived to the pit stop in first place. Abbie and Ryan came in second, James and Abba in third and Team Twinny in fourth. Those brats haven’t been “nice twins” for a while, and I’m glad they ended up behind the dudes they stole from.

The Chippendales ended up just ahead of the Beekman Boys and the Monster Truckers at the Roadblock, but they had a good lead. The Chippendales grabbed fifth place, and to my delight Josh and Brent did manage to arrive in sixth place and stay in the race.

This was a pretty boring and predictable leg of the race, but I’m not sorry to see Rob and Kelley go. Rob runs me the wrong way, and they were never going to win. Buh-bye.

There are six teams left, so I hope the race begins to get more exciting. I’m rooting for the Beekman Boys, the rockers, and as a safe bet, Abbie and Ryan. Though the scenes from next week didn’t indicate good things for any of those teams in Moscow, Russia.

Yeah, most of the teams near the top are bugging me. I was never a fan of Abbie and Ryan and those twins are definitely getting to me. If it wasn’t for Trey (who did say no to the money scheme but ended up taking the money anyway), I wouldn’t be that for Team Texas either. I’m still indifferent about the rockers.

Yup, I’m rooting for the Beekman Boys (they need to PICK. IT. UP.) and Chippendales. Jayme’s loudness is growing on me and I just find James’ aloofness endearing.

I think my eyes literally rolled when I saw that the speedbump was eating ice cream as fast as you can. And then the spa… SPA! What happened to production value? I still remember being completely vowed when TAR did that trenches challenges in France. (side note: I miss Brent and Caite’s endless hate for “the evil lesbians”.) Here’s to hoping the second half of this season has something to rival that.

I just want to clarify that I wasn’t a fan of Brent and Caite… I just thought it was entertaining how ridiculous the level of giddiness Ms. Teen South Carolina went through during that season about U-Turning them. :P

‘She’s an idiot and she’s on Youtube to prove it’ -> That has to be one of the Race’s best lines ever. :D

      • Jill says:

I agree, they need some tougher challenges to really bring up the level of competition. That was a good season.

Overall, while this leg was predictable, I found it funny so I mostly enjoyed it. I hated the stealing money thing, especially in Bangladesh, I felt so uncomfortable watching it. I get that it’s a game, and I would have had slightly less of an issue with it if it happened in say Luxembourg, but in one of the poorest countries? Bad, bad taste. The ice cream was super lame too – they should have at least made them try to guess some traditional Turkish ice cream flavors or something. Also with the baths, in theory I like the challenge because it is a huge part of their culture, but it would have been better if each teammate had to scrub down the other one – make it a little more challenging and less luxurious.

    • Jill says:

I agree, the money thing was ugly. The rocker dudes didn’t have any other choice but to beg, so I don’t blame them. But I wish it hadn’t happened.

  3. Herb Mullican says:

I can’t believe that the Amazing Race let the twins get away with that. So the rules condone theft? Hey Phil, they should have at least been given a penalty. I wasn’t disappointed with the show. I was disappointed with the Amazing Race for letting them get away with that. It would be nice now to see the twins wind up with a task that they absolutely could not handle. They’ve earned it.It would serve them right if they ‘Lost’ their Express Pass.

    • Jill says:

I too wondered if they’d get a penalty. Since the rocker dudes were still in the travel agency when the money was dropped, it’s possible they could have found it when they realized it was gone. But I guess there’s no rule prohibiting picking up cash you find on the ground.

  4. Aiden says:

    Come on Twiniiiiiiie! :D

What they did was shitty, though, I was disappointed by that. And also Trey & Lexi: even though they’ve really grown on me since the first episode, they also took half of the rockers’ money. And when that guy said he was going to give James&Abba some money because ‘you’re my guest’? That was… incredible. Some people are just awesome.

Also being counted as a minus for this episode was the Speed Bump. I’m pretty sure it was the most ridiculous one they’ve ever had. Ever. Really, eat ice-cream? From in front of the building/place your next clue is? Really?

But I really, really like the teams this season! My least favorite one has just been eliminated, and honestly… good riddance! Rob screaming at that taxi driver ‘ we have to beat them or else we have to go home’? What did that accomplish? If I were the driver I’d have driven even slower and then asked if I can take them home as well. Make a little extra money.

I’ve enjoyed the episode. It was light and fun, just what I wanted this week.

    • Jill says:

Yeah, I didn’t like that Trey and Lexie went along with it, especially since Trey seemed like he wasn’t entirely comfortable.

  5. Fiona R says:

I hope that the production crew reimbursed the locals who made me tear up with their generosity. I will not be watching next week. There is one thing about being opportunistic, morally bankrupt is another and no penalties from the production team just does not make good tv. $100 goes a long way in Bangladesh, and replacing that money impacted local families far more than $100 would in America. Yeah, it’s a contest, but winning by stealing isn’t winning. It makes you scum. Karma.

  6. Davide Maistrello says:

I’m so sorry for commenting this late, but the Australian guy who puts the videos on YouTube got his brand new account cancelled for copyright violation and it took two days for him to reupload it on his old one. Appearently, he thought that publicizing his spankingly new only-for-TAR-videos account with a public video would be a good idea to make people subscribe to said channel; unluckily for him, CBS was on his tail after just two hours.

Enough with that. I felt really uncomfortable watching the twins and Trey & Lexi dividing the rockers’ money. I don’t think that after that scene, which was painful to watch, I’ll still support Natalie and Nadiya as I did before – yes, I realize that this is a race and the aim of it is outlasting the other couples by every means, but this is just too much and encourages future players to do the same. Bad, really bad.
However, seeing Rob and Kelley suffering in the metro made me feel better immediately. He is so hard-headed, and his wife didn’t seem to do anything to correct his wrong decisions. At that point, I was desperate to see them last – plus, I had them down as the next couple out of the race in an elimination chart I wrote down out of boredom during university lessons.

The challenges were…funny. Sure, the Speed Bump was easy – I hate ice cream, so I wouldn’t be jumping with glee at the thought of doing it twice, but it seemed it wasn’t the case for the Beekmans and I was glad to see them completing it in relative little time. As soon as I saw the detour options I thought that Simit was going to be the quicker choice, but Rob and Kelley flew through it with ease and didn’t seem to make up ground with the first. The sherbet was pretty pointless and didn’t really shake the ranking list.

In the end, the truckers never caught up with Josh and Brent and were eliminated – finally- from the race. Yay! That really made my day, I can’t stand Rob and I’m happy I won’t hear from him anymore. I still think that at the moment Abbie and Ryan have the best shot at winning, but I’ve an awfully feeling that the twins will be on the race until the very end. Thank you as usual for the wonderful and funny recap!

  7. MOCK! says:

I put the captions on to figure out what the hell they we’re screaming…”Twinny”…ugh….

    Annoying AND reprehensible!
